2. Fill the chicken wire with the different types of foliage. Use the autumnal branches to stretch upwards and outwards from the arrangement; the asparagus ferns and bracken to cascade down over the wall; and fill out the centre section with the abelia. Add the hydrangeas now, too, dispersing them throughout at different heights.

3. Each rose needs its own water supply. Attach a small test tube of water to the end of each stem, securing the lid with florist’s pot tape. Insert the test tubes into the chicken wire. Keep some roses long so that they jut out of the foliage, while cutting others shorter and nestling them in. Place most of the roses around the bottom of the stairs, the fullest area of the banister, and gradually thin them out the further up you go. Finally, use the amaranthus and crocosmia to bring in a different texture and an additional autumnal twist to the design.

4. To complete the design, place the shallow container at the base of the stairs, filled with chicken wire and taped over the top to secure (see here and here). Fill the container with tall grasses, connecting the ground with the arrangement on the stairs. Keep them quite haphazard, just as they would be at the end of the summer season. Use a small amount of abelia lower down to conceal the vessel and add depth to the final design.
